We took the extended backcountry tour (3 1/2 hours). Our guide was Larry Team. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable about the reservation, but gave us bits of history throughout the tour. He also showed us where various movies were filmed. Larry was a great guide, including singing a native song, and we would recommend him to anyone. P.S. tip your tour guide. The valley was closed for months due to COVID and all tours were canceled.
Totally worth every single penny and definitely worth your time. You learn so much about the Navajo Indian community on this trip. The tour guide really went out of her way to show us many spots on the 17 mile scenic drive since it was closed for Christmas. Really kind service. Highly recommend it!
Our tour guide, Larry Team, was amazing! He shared a lot of history related to Monument Valley and opened up his culture to us. He took us to so many beautiful sights and told us about the best photo spots, angles and even shooting modes to use. You can tell that Larry really knows his stuff! We never felt rushed at any of the stops, in fact, I think Larry took his time really showing us everything possible during the time we had with him! At one point he even sang a Navajo song for us and played a drum at the Big Hogan rock formation. The weather was very cold, icy, and snowy in the morning and the unpaved roads were rough but Larry was a great driver and we all felt comfortable and secure even with the rough terrain and weather. By the afternoon the weather had cleared up and we really got to see the best of both views (with and without snow). I'd highly recommend touring with Larry!!
Larry Team was our Navajo (or Dineh) guide for this excursion, and he was great -- very professional and able to smoothly take us to all the main attractions around Monument Valley with plenty of time to see the awesome rock formations and take pictures. More importantly, he gave deep but fairly direct explanations of history and culture that helped me understand the native perspective, that I had wanted to learn about and share with the children -- more than just the rocks. His story-telling of the Navajo creation myth and the connection between the land and the beliefs was my favorite aspect. He was modest and polite about making sure everyone got what they wanted out of the tour, so did not press any particular view, or talk more than was necessary, but he was willing to answer any more complicated or personal question put to him (which I did). This was a van tour which felt very private, and we appreciated the warmth of the interior, because November is quite chilly.
Monument Valley itself was spectacular, and our tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable! I am knocking the tour down by 1-star though because we did not get to see all the backcountry stops as advertised. By choosing the “extended” tour, we assumed we’d have more than enough time to see it all! The other couple in our tour group were a few minutes late, so we were the last tour to leave in the morning. We then arrived back 10 minutes early. We weren’t told we were skipping any spots, so unsure what the reason was. Other than being disappointed for missing some of the highlighted stops, the tour was an amazing experience!
The land formations are indescribably magnificent, but without the narration and knowledge of our guide Larry Team we would have missed out on the full experience of it all. His history of the Navajo nation, song, and description of the rock formations added to the education one needs to make the most of the tour.
We did the full day Monument Valley and Mystery Valley tour with Larry Team. Larry was excellent and provided us with insight into the Dine (Navajo) and the Anasazi cultures. If you are interested in learning about and visiting ancient sites, this is a tour for you. Without a knowledgeable guide like Larry, you would not be able to access or find these sites. Larry is a skilled story teller with a very calming demeanor.
Full 3.5hr tour plus transportation time, great value. The scenery is majestic and then our guide, Larry Team, just elevated the experience with his stories, knowledge, and creative picture help! No better way to explore Monument Valley than with Tribal Tours, and Larry Team.
