**IMPORTANT - Please note, guests meeting at the Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel must meet at least 15 MINUTES PRIOR to the tour's departure time.**
Guests are required to wear closed-toe walking shoes or hiking boots, long pants. We recommend bringing a light sweatshirt or jacket
Guests must bring their own water bottles. Tour operator will provide filtered water refills.
Please advise your parka size (small, medium, large, x-large or xx-large) and choice of meal at time of booking. If you do not indicate this at the time of booking, you will be required to call and advise them of this information directly.

The access road to Mauna Kea is four-wheel drive only, so it can be bumpy. The custom off-road transit vans will get you to the top and back in safety and comfort. The transit vans can carry a maximum of 14 passengers

Journeying to the summit of Mauna Kea with its amazing views and group of huge telescopes was remarkable, especially at sunset. The stargazing at the station somewhat below through the high-quality telescope was also excellent. We had an exceptional guide, Jason, who brought the whole experience to life. He was very knowledgeable about a whole range of applicable subjects and a really nice guy too. Before departing we were sent by email the photos of the astronomical objects we had just observed. Well done and so enjoyable!

Jason was an amazing guide. Showed us a great time. Learned lots about the stars!! The view on top of the mountain was breathtaking. Also learned a lot about Hawaii! I would come back just because of Jason.

This is a two part trip, with a drive to the summit of Mauna Loa for sunset, then a descent to the Visitor's Center for star gazing. Both were great. I have never been up to 13.5 K feet before. The stars at the visitor's center were wonderful. My only regret is that I would have liked to

We enjoyed a fun and memorable afternoon and evening with Jason of HF&T. All pre-excursion communications and planning were clear and concise. Our expectations for the trip were fully met. Jason is a wonderful host, guide, driver, server, history buff,, astronomer, and all round nice person. We enjoyed Jason’s stories of Hawaiian culture, geological and astronomy explanations, and his commitment to insuring all guests had a great experience. The sunset was amazing, stargazing unbelievable, with a beating moonrise to top it all off. Highly recommend.

The view was breathtaking. I have never seen so many stars, other than on the internet. It was absolutely awe inspiring. The air was crisp, clean and cool. The sunset was beautiful, we did a time lapse video. Jeff was informative on the stars, he was a great host. He took pictures and kind enough to share them with the group. It’s hard to believe how cold it was up there, Jeff brought some hot chocolate and the trip was simply amazing.

An incredible one-in-a-lifetime experience. The views are breath-taking and include a beautiful sunset, a clear view of the milky way, and my personal favorite (through the telescope)- the rings of Saturn. The food was great and van was clean and well kept. Jeff was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. We enjoyed being able to learn more about Hawaiian culture and the meaning behind the summit. We did this as a part of our honeymoon and do not regret it. You should definitely consider adding this onto you to do list- and with this company!

Had a great experience on this tour. Jeff was a knowledgeable and personable guide and the sunset and stars were fantastic! The picnic dinner was delicious. The sunset was better than I expected and the stars were great (would have been even better had the weather cooperated but as it was we saw three main planets, multiple nebulae and several galaxies and star clusters). Well worth the time and money. The small group size, COVID precautions and general attentiveness of our guide Jeff made it a once-in-a-lifetime memorable experience.

A wonderful experience in all respects. Justin was very knowledgeable and personable and did a terrific job explaining the history and geology of Hawaii. When we began to view stars and planets, he was visibly excited.

I have been to the Big Island four previous times and have always wanted to do the summit tour and the star gazing. I made the reservation through the concierge at my resort and so had little information on Hawaii Forest and Trails. Jeff was our guide and immediately made us feel welcome. I was amazed at his knowledge on the Volcano, Hawaiian culture and history, and of course astronomy. The dinner was small but wow, the beef stew was amazing especially when eating it at 9000 ft altitude. He made a couple of extra stops that added to the experience and off course sun set was amazing at near the summit. The star gazing went beyond my expectations, especially with the addition of the digital telescope. Jeff was kind enough to forward the pictures and I will prize them for years. I would definitely recommend Jeff and Hawaii Forest and Trails to my friends traveling to the Big Island.
